Cities have a big role to play in closing the climate change and sustainability gap. The utilization of materials and the efficiency of production can be increased by circular economy solutions, while simultaneously decreasing the burden laid on environment and waste management. In order to be successful, a circular economy needs strong networks and platforms, where producers, material and consumers meet.
The city of Espoo wants to further the well-being of its residents, environment and economy by leading the transition to circular economy and producing new solutions. To support the progress, Demos Helsinki will produce a report on the role of the city as an agent in creating a circular economy city. The focus is also on the current operating models, including agents, of circular economy in the city of Espoo. The report will support the political strategy of Sustainable Espoo and is made cooperatively with Ethica oy.
Espoo has invested in the planning of sustainable city, which is why it has been rated as one of the top cities of sustainable development in Europe. As the first city to join the national Commitment to Sustainable Development in 2015, Espoo carries out a cross-administrative sustainable development programme including devising sustainable mobility solutions.
