Satu Lähteenoja, Head of Resource-wise economy
Satu Lähteenoja is a geographer and an expert on sustainable lifestyles. She specializes in the calculation and analysis of natural resource consumption related to sustainable lifestyle choices. Satu graduated with a degree in geography and urban planning from the University of Helsinki.
Sustainable consumption as an issue was present throughout her time at the University. She completed her Masters thesis on the eco-efficiency of the Finnish transport system with the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation (FANC). After completing her degree, Satu stayed at FANC and studied the material footprint of Finnish households throughout 2006 – 2008. For the following two years she worked as a researcher at CSCP (Centre for Sustainable Consumption and Production) in Wuppertal, Germany, where she arranged numerous international conferences, facilitated workshops and led two EU projects related to research and politics of sustainable production and consumption.
Satu joined Demos Helsinki in early 2011. She led the European Commission funded SPREAD Sustainable lifestyles 2050 research project. She found partners and partner companies to form a consortium and took overall responsibility for the project. Among other things, the project produced a number of scenarios for sustainable lifestyles in a future Europe.
Satu has extensive experience in various volunteer and network organizations ranging from scouting activities as a child to working as a banker in the Lahti Time Bank. She is a pioneer of the de-growth discussion in Finland, and has been involved in coordinating the national Thrift Week.
